To pursue regulation of genetic counsellors in Alberta while considering the benefits and limitations of regulation.
To advocate for the genetic counselling profession.
To promote the unity and communication among genetic counsellors with an interest in the practice of genetic counselling within Alberta.
Genetic counsellors are health care providers with specialized training in medical genetics and counselling. Their training includes a Master’s degree in Genetic Counselling or similar degree, after which, genetic counsellors practicing in Alberta must undergo and maintain certification by the Canadian Board of Genetic Counselling-Conseil Canadien de Conseil Génétique (CBGC-CCCG) or the American Board of Genetic Counselling.
Genetic Counsellors help individuals and families understand genetic conditions, assess risks for inherited disorders, and provide guidance regarding genetic testing and results.
